Can my GP complete my D4 medical?

Yes, your GP can complete your D4 medical, as long as they are a GMC-registered doctor who is licensed to practise in the UK. The DVLA does not require the assessment to be carried out by your GP specifically; it can be completed either by your GP or by a private medical provider.

What matters is that:

  • the doctor is appropriately registered, and
  • the information recorded on the form is accurate and complete

The DVLA makes the licensing decision based on the evidence provided, not the type of clinic where the medical was carried out.

GP vs private provider — key differences

GP practices

  • clinics are experienced with D4 forms and DVLA requirements

Considerations:

  • they may not have access to your full GP record
  • you may be asked to bring supporting documentation for certain conditions

Where conditions are straightforward and well-controlled, this rarely causes delays.
