HGV Medical – Key Information
What Is an HGV Medical?
An HGV medical is a health check required for Class 1 and Class 2 drivers to confirm you’re fit to safely drive heavy goods vehicles. The results are recorded on the official D4 form.
Is the HGV Medical the Same as the D4 Medical?
The HGV medical is the assessment itself. The D4 form is the document the doctor completes during your appointment so you can submit it to DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
Do I Need a Medical to Renew My HGV Licence?
Yes. You must complete an HGV medical when applying for your licence for the first time and again each time you renew it, as part of the standard licensing process.
What’s Included in Your HGV Medical
Medical History Review
We go through your medical history and current health so the doctor can record any conditions that need to be noted on your D4 form.
Blood Pressure
We measure your blood pressure to confirm it is within an acceptable range for driving heavy goods vehicles.
Vision assessment
We assess your eyesight (with or without glasses or contact lenses) to make sure you meet the visual standards for HGV driving.
Physical Examination
We carry out a brief physical check to assess your overall fitness to drive large vehicles safely.
D4 Form
We complete your D4 medical form accurately during your visit and issue it ready for submission with your licence paperwork.

What are Class 1 and Class 2 HGV licences?
- Class 2 (Category C) allows you to drive rigid HGV vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, such as delivery lorries and refuse trucks.
- Class 1 (Category C+E) allows you to drive articulated lorries with a trailer, including large HGVs used for long-distance haulage.
Can I continue driving my HGV while awaiting my license renewal?
Under Section 88 of the Road Traffic, you may drive if you meet the medical standards, have applied for the same category within the last 12 months, and have not been told to stop driving.
What medical conditions stop you from driving HGV?
Some medical conditions may affect eligibility, including certain vision, neurological, or heart-related conditions. Each case is assessed individually.
