A taxi medical is a health assessment required by local councils to confirm you’re medically fit to hold a taxi or private hire licence.
Who Needs a Taxi Medical?
Taxi and private hire drivers applying for a new licence or renewing an existing one are required to complete a medical assessment.
How Much Does a Taxi Medical Cost?
Our standard taxi medical is £50. If your local council requires a full review of your GP medical records, the appointment time is longer and the cost may increase.
What’s Included in Your Taxi Medical

We review your medical history and GP medical records so any relevant conditions can be adressed for your taxi or private hire licence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still drive if I fail the taxi medical?
If your taxi licence has expired, you cannot continue driving until your council approves your medical and renews your licence. If your licence is still valid, your council will advise whether you may continue driving during their review.
What medical conditions can affect taxi licensing?
Some health conditions may need further review by your council, depending on how well they are controlled. Your council makes the final decision based on the medical information provided.
Is a drug test included in taxi medicals?
A routine drug test is not part of a standard taxi medical. However, individual councils may request additional checks in specific cases.
Do councils require full GP medical records for taxi medicals?
Some councils ask for full GP records, while others only need a summary. If you’re unsure what your council requires, you can give us a call and we’ll guide you before your appointment.
Do I need a new taxi medical if I change councils?
In many cases, yes. Each council applies its own rules, and a new medical may be required when transferring your licence.
What happens if my council asks for additional checks after my medical?
If further checks are required, your council will advise you on the next steps. This may involve additional medical information or follow-up assessments.
What Is the Difference Between a Taxi Licence and a Private Hire Licence?
A Taxi Licence (Hackney Carriage) allows you to:
- Pick up passengers from ranks
- Be hailed on the street
- Take pre-booked jobs
A Private Hire Licence only allows you to:
- Take pre-booked journeys through an operator
- Not pick up passengers from ranks or street hails
Both licences usually require the same medical standard, but the operating rules are different.
