What Does a Boxing Medical Involve?

Whether you are having a Boxing Competition Registration Form 1 (BCR1) medical or a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) medical, the assessments are quite similar in many aspects which includes:

  • Detailed medical history
  • Previous fights and results
  • Social History e.g. smoking, alcohol intake
  • Eye & Ear tests
  • Blood Pressure & Pulse checks
  • Heart, Lung, Abdomen, & Nerves examination
  • Urine Dip
  • Precombat Blood profile: HIV, Hep B, Hep C (mandatory).

Blockers To Passing Fitness To Box

Absolute Blockers:

  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Implantable devices (e.g., pacemakers, ICD defibrillators, stomas, cochlear implants)

Relevant Blockers:

Competitors may be allowed to box once the cause has been identified and the condition is well-controlled:

  • Fractures: Minimum of 12 weeks post-injury
  • Lower Jaw Dental Extractions: Within 12 weeks
  • Heart Murmur: Further investigation is needed to rule out serious underlying causes that may be harmful if undetected
  • Pregnancy
  • Hernias of any type

Who Regulates Boxing Medicals for Amateur and Professional boxers?

For amateur boxers, medical examinations are governed by England Boxing, while professional boxers fall under the British Boxing Board of Control.

Our doctors are affiliated with England Boxing and are authorized to complete medical assessments for both amateur and professional boxers.
